Many advances in dentistry have helped to make the dental visit more comfortable.  Some of these include the use of new anesthetics.

Topical Anesthetic

A topical anesthetic is placed with a cotton swab, preparing a site before using an injectable local anesthetic.  This numbs the surface of the tissue, making the injection feel better.

Local Anesthetic

New anesthetics have replaced novacaine resulting in less allergies, and a longer acting and more profound numbness, making the dental appointment more comfortable.

Nitrous Oxide or “Laughing Gas”

Nitrous oxide is an inhaled agent that helps patient feel more relaxed.  It is often used in conjunction with local anesthetic to allow the patient to remain as calm and relaxed as possible during the dental appointment.  When the procedure is completed, the patient will breathe 100% oxygen to clear the nitrous from the body before being allowed to leave.
